Wine Country Harvest-#10 of 100 Reasons I Love Living in Sonoma County!

image courtesy of Iron Horse Vineyards-FB post

As I write this it is raining here in West County Sonoma. Rain, water, is always a good thing in our part of the world, except during harvest month. And yes, we are right in the middle of harvesting grapes for the next great vintage!

Many of our neighbors have their grapes in and still others with more to come. But harvest is always a time of excitement…short picking time…under the clock and the weather gods…and much anticipation…that of another bit of magic to create that perfect bottle of wine many of us enjoy.

For us here in Sonoma County it’s harvest that marks the start of fall. We may not have the flaming fall foliage of other parts of our country, but, we are an agricultural community and therefore fall is one of our most anticipated seasons.

The Russian River Valley Chardonnay grapes are harvested in the coldest hours of the night to preserve crisp acids, ideal sugar levels and fresh fruit flavors. Below is some footage of vineyard worker picking crew captured 9/29/11. Chardonnay harvest began on 9/26/11. We are indeed blessed to live in a part of the world that is as abundant and productive as this one is. Why don’t you come and visit us? In the meantime…

Enjoy the video from a night harvest for Jordan Chardonnay grapes. It’s a bit of magic, and a lot of hard work. Cheers!

Sonoma Wine Country-Russian Hill Estate

p style=”text-align: left”>Living in Sonoma wine country affords us some of the best wines in the world. My personal favorites are the Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs. I don’t know what it is, but something about this appellation creates some of the smoothest reds I’ve ever tasted.

One of the wines served with our Mushroom Risotto

One of my favorites is created by my good friend Patrick Melley, winemaker extraordinaire at Russian Hill Estate Winery. The Russian Hill estate is located at 4525 Slusser Road, Windsor CA, and is a well kept secret here in the valley. Not always easy to get at retail, people often go directly to the vineyard to purchase. And, it’s definitely worth the trip.    [Read more…]
